Our flagship product, Tear Stain Away, is a systemic treatment for the elimination of pet tear stains and related mouth and paw staining associated with tear stains. The active ingredient is Tylosin tartrate. At the recommended subclinical dose, this all natural OTC macrolide antibiotic (in the Erythromycin family), safely and effectively eliminates the two primary, non-environmental causes of tearstains, Ptyrosporin (Red Yeast bacteria) and Porphyrins in tears and saliva. As a narrow spectrum antibiotic, Tylosin tartrate does not generally cause cross-resistance with other antibiotics in its class.
Before recommending Tear Stain Away, or any product to address the tear staining issue, several common sense steps should be taken. Since tear stains will not likely occur if the pet does not have excessive tearing (Epiphora) that keeps the areas around the eyes moist, we need to eliminate obvious environmental and health related causes of the excess tearing, if possible. Before anything else, a trip to your Veterinarian is called for to eliminate health related causes, like teething, ear and eye infections, and allergies, etc. Hairs around the eye sockets should be examined to ensure that they are not irritating the eyes. Good routine hygiene should be employed. Food should be examined for dyes and potential allergens. Sometimes switching to a premium dry kibble with no additives or preservatives will help. Also, if you have a high iron and/or mineral content in your water, bottled water should be considered.
Once the above health and environmental issues have been addressed, we recommend a course of Tear Stain Away. It works two ways. First, the anti-bacterial/anti-yeast/anti-fungal action of the active ingredient, Tylosin tartrate, eliminates the Ptyrosporin (Red Yeast) infection and inhibits future growth. This is a major contributor to the dark red/brown staining, and the pungent odor sometimes associated. Second, Tylosin tartrate binds with the nitrogen based, protein, Porphyrin and inhibits the “photo-reactive” aspect of the molecule. In other words, it doesn’t allow the iron and other minerals that routinely bind to the Porphyrin molecule to turn reddish brown in the presence of light. That eliminates the second non-environmental cause of tearstains. This also reduces the reddish discoloration around some pet’s mouths and paws because the Porphyrins are also present in saliva.
Pet owners will start seeing positive results in 5-7 days, with complete elimination of staining in 4-6 weeks. The actual deeply stained hairs have to either grow out or be clipped. The new hair shafts will be pristine. The dose should be tapered off over 4 weeks. Many pets will be able to discontinue use with good results. If staining does recur, re-introduce Tear Stain Away, gradually increasing the dose to a sustainable level that keeps the staining at bay.
There are no demonstrated negative effects from long-term administration. The product does not appreciably accumulate in the animal’s tissues and orally administered Tylosin tartrate is rapidly excreted, primarily in bile. There is a serum half-life on the order of 59 minutes in small dogs. Files that review some of the studies done on Tylosin tartrate as it relates to dogs and other animals are available upon request.
